Dust-related interannual and intraseasonal variability of Martian climate using data assimilation

چکیده
Introduction: Data assimilation has been applied in several studies [Montabone et al., 2005; Lewis et al., 2005; Montabone et al., 2006a; Montabone et al., 2006b; Lewis et al., 2007; Wilson et al., 2008; Rogberg et al. 2010] as an effective tool with which to analyze spacecraft observations and phenomena (e.g., atmospheric tides, transient wave behavior, effects of clouds in the tropics, weather predictability, etc.) in the Martian atmosphere. A data assimilation scheme combined with a Martian Global Circulation Model (GCM) is able to provide a complete, balanced, fourdimensional solution consistent with observations. The GCM we use [Forget et al., 1999] combines a spectral dynamical solver and a tracer transport scheme developed in UK and Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique (LMD; Paris, France) physics package developed in collaboration with Oxford, The Open University and Instituto de Astrofisica de Andalucia (Granada, Spain). Here, we describe and discuss dust-related interannual and intraseasonal variability of the Martian climate. The results shown in this study come from a reanalysis using the Martian GCM with data assimilation scheme which assimilates Mars Global Surveyor/Thermal Emission Spectrometer (MGS/TES) retrievals of temperature and column dust opacity. The detailed model setup was described by Montabone et al. [2006a], and the data assimilation scheme employed in this study was introduced in the work of Lewis et al. [2007].

The climate of Mars from assimilations of Mars Climate Sounder data
The works carried out during the first year of my DPhil project are presented in this report. The objective of this project is to make use of a unique and advanced data assimilation system that enables the combining of observational data with predictions from a global numerical model of the Martian atmospheric circulation. In this report, an introduction to the planet Mars and a brief descripti...
متن کاملInterannual Variability of the Mars Thermosphere: New Simulations and Comparisons with Recent Mars Datasets
Detailed studies exist that explore the global, seasonal, and interannual variations of the Martian lower atmosphere (below 90 km) [e.g. Liu et al., 2003]. Key findings indicate that observed temperatures are quite repeatable from one Mars aphelion season to the next. Conversely, perihelion temperatures can change radically on an interannual basis, depending on the timing and intensity of dust ...
متن کاملAssimilating and Modeling Dust Transport in the Martian Climate System
A meteorological data assimilation system has been developed recently for analyzing measurements of temperature and dust opacity on Mars and has been successfully applied in several studies (e.g. Montabone et al. 2005, Lewis et al. 2007) to study various atmospheric phenomena. A more sophisticated data assimilation system, now with full dust transport incorporated, is becoming available to repr...
متن کاملModeling the Martian dust cycle 2. Multiannual radia- tively active dust transport simulations
Multi-annual dust transport simulations have been performed using a Mars general circulation model containing a dust transport scheme which responds to changes in the atmospheric state. If the dust transport is ‘radiatively active’ the atmospheric state also responds to changes in the dust distribution. This paper examines the suspended dust distribution obtained using different lifting paramet...
متن کاملInferring long memory processes in the climate network via ordinal pattern analysis.
We use ordinal patterns and symbolic analysis to construct global climate networks and uncover long- and short-term memory processes. Data analyzed are the monthly averaged surface air temperature (SAT field), and the results suggest that the time variability of the SAT field is determined by patterns of oscillatory behavior that repeat from time to time, with a periodicity related to intraseas...
